Erroneous Consumption Value 16777.215 (gas)

Occasionally, SMEST2 gas meters have been seen to report an anomalously high consumption value, reporting 16777.215 (m3) within single 30min periods. This is a result of the meter failing to capture the consumption value correctly and reporting the hex value 0xFFFFFF (which is 167777215 in decimal). This is a "feature" of the SMETS specification, the specification uses the 0xFFFFFF value within the consumption field as an error code (which we believe isn't best practice but is what is defined within the specification).

n3rgy has considered how to process this error but as we have since discovered meter manufacturers using other similar values (which are not part of the SMETS specification) we have chosen not to process or modify the results delivered from the meter.

Gas meters of domestic properties are classified as U6 and occasionally U16, commercial meters are larger (note, this does not include industrial meters).

We recommend our customers detect excessive half hour readings appropriate to their target customers likely meter size but also set a maximum limit of approx 80 m3 / 900kWh (per half hour reading) unless you are specifically targeting industrial customers.

NOTE: We've also received reports of the following erroneous readings.

8590.017, 8590.041, 34364.271, 4295.103, 4295.084, 8590.119, 8590.063, 8591.484, 8590.421, 38655.37, 186227.0865 all of which seem to be manufactures creating non-standard error codes for failures within their devices. Due to the nature of the national programme and the position taken by government and the regulator this is no obligation or requirement for manufactures to publish these error codes so they can be captured and processed explicitly.
